Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 8-9 inches

Date of Report: December 29, 2021

Area Report:

More than 250 miles of groomed snowmobile trails lace Barron County, including the popular Tuscobia State Trail with 76 miles heading east from Rice Lake to Park Falls; the Wild Rivers Trail heading north from Rice Lake’s city limits leads 97 miles to Superior.

Barron County snowmobile and ATV trails are closed. We received approximately 8 inches of snow over the past few days, however this is not enough snow to create a sustainable snowmobile trail. Hopefully we receive more snow in the next week or two so we can open the trails for the season.

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Area Report:

A friendly reminder, while we are almost to New Years we are very early in the season. This snow wasn’t an accumulation over a week or even days to ready, it was over night. There takes some patience in trail and grooming work, patience with Mother Nature not just giving us snow but setting it up right with the correct temps and precipitation. Also patience with private land owners knowing their property is safe to allow us on and open gates. Patience with all of these volunteers and that is what these hard working people are, VOLUNTEERS. This is a vacation destination but it is their home and reality. They have businesses to run, many of which cater to the riders day and night, other jobs to tend to, family lives to tend to. They too have experienced shortages of help so have been working around the clock for almost two years. Some jobs such as big brushing jobs have to be hired out and paid for and we have to wait for contractors, there are only so many hours in a day. So please have patience. Our volunteers are working to groom, brush, clear, pack trails as fast as they can. Many rocks get unearthed from riding on trails, moguls form with heavy traffic, many branches blow down in the wind and fall from heavy snow, it’s the Northwoods, we have an abundance of trees and branches, trails change hourly. We are not into full season where every trail will have perfection. Please do not focus on that. These volunteers deserve the utmost gratitude and respect for their loyalty, hard work and passion to keep this sport alive and well. We appreciate you all so much that show such gratitude, your kindness and positivity is what keeps them doing it year and year! Ride safe! And if you can volunteer even a little please do so, even if it means stopping and throwing a branch off the trail or visit our website to report a trail issue, please don’t complain about but rather report. There isn’t trail issues on purpose nor are they ignored, and remember those repairs take manpower, money and sometimes certain steps of approval if need be i.e. DNR approval, DOT approval, etc. The volunteers can’t be everywhere and all times so your eyes are very much appreciated! We want your riding experience to be the best! We are grateful to be apart of so many memories!

LCO and Grindstone staking is complete.

Whitefish is now staked. A good solid 10” of ice.

A reminder for the upcoming weekend: The annual “Tuscobia Winter Ultra” non motorized marathon is this coming weekend. Starting at 6am Friday, December 31 and ending at 6pm January 2nd, hikers, skiers and fat tire bicyclists will be on the Tuscobia 24/7 from Rice Lake to Park Falls. They will be departing at different times. If anyone is using the Tuscobia with their snowmobile please be courteous and slow down when meeting or passing anyone.

Groomers will head out today and tomorrow on the local land trails after the fresh powder that has finally found us up here in the Northwoods of Minnesota.  Please give our groomers the space they need to make the trails safer for all of us.  As we rode from 3pm to 7pm on Tuesday, Dec 28th on the David Dill Taconite Trail from the East End of Lake Vermilion up to the Bear Head Lake Area, the trail had not yet been fully groomed.  Several swamp areas were not yet completely packed or frozen yet.  Very rough and many rocks on the trail in the area by Bear Head.  Take it slow!!

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 12″-16″

Date of Report: December 29, 2021

Area Report:

Expect good early season conditions on the trails. For the most part they are in really good condition in wooded areas however the base is relatively thin in open areas and Fields. Expect to encounter small patches of Open water through swamps, nothing major I was easily able to navigate through it on a two up touring sled with two people on it. Be aware you still May encounter a few trees that may fall over the trail. We have cleaned them up but we have had a few that were damaged in the Storm come down in the last couple days. The lakes are marked I am unsure of the conditions of the ice so travel at your own risk. Have fun and be safe.

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 2 inches new snow over night. 4 inch base. 12 inche snow depth

Date of Report: December 29, 2021

Area Report:

Good morning,

Well not too much new SNOW late yesterday into this morning. Less than 2 inches.  All counts.  Base building & 12 inches of SNOW.

Temps will stay in the low to mid teens for the next 7-10 days during the day.  Singles digits above & below zero at night.  Perfect for the trails.

In Sno-Eagles Country, Eagle River trails are in EARLY RIDING CONDITION. Expect all types of riding. Swamps & wet areas are tight. Short ride yesterday. Lots of traffic so all sorts of conditions. 10E both one ways were groomed.  Some chop by the Sports Arena.  Section after Bloom Road crossing was frozen tight & in pretty good shape.  Thin snow in the open area better in the woods.  Some snirt at the Loon Lake Road crossing.  The grade (10/13) into town had plenty of snow & was great.  So was through town.  Trail 17N was for the most part good except a section on the east side of the Hwy 45N.  Trail 3 aka Manske Swamp was tight & swamp section smooth.  West land side & 13N from the intersection rough.  Wisconsin River Bridge(10/13) was rough.  Took 10 heading toward Bauer’s Dam.  Headed to Conover trails & took 10/13S, the grade back to Eagle River.

Overnight the groomers groomed nearly the entire Sno-Eagles system.  Here’s what was not groomed:

  • 10E from MJ’s Wayside east to Three Lake connect (east of town)
  • Grampa Grahm Trail 1N off of 10E (east of town trail to Eagle Waters)
  • 13N from the Hwy G crossing to 3N intersection (north of town)
  • 3N aka Manske Swamp (north of town)
  • 17N – from Trail 1S intersection heading east to Phelps connect
  • Wisconsin River aka Trail 10 – eastside of bridge (northwest of town)

Catfish & Eagle lake trails are NOT marked.  So please stay off for now.

There is a re route on 10/13/7/17 heading west.  Here’s a photo of the change.  It’s rough ride now.  Should smooth out as we get more SNOW.  Please stay on the trail.

KEEP DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!

See ya all on the trails!
