Snowmobile Report – March 17, 2022
The Snowmobile Trails in Ashland County are Open and are holding up in GOOD condition – very Spring like.   Due to the warm weather trails will not be groomed.  Ashland County Trails will be closed on Sunday, March 20 at 11:59pm.  Watch for machinery on Trail 21-13, south of Cayuga, trail being rebuilt by Forest Service.  Detour: Snowmobilers go South on 181-183 intersection and can get on the trail by the little stub off 181 that goes to the trail.  Watch for logging where trail crosses Mud Line on Trail 12 (out of Butternut) and CAUTION, keep an eye out for chunks of dirt and rocks.   Please stay on the trail. Lots of Ashland County snowmobile trails are on farmers land, please be respectful so we don’t loose our easement to their property.

Hello Riders!!
Thank you to all of you that rode Sawyer County snowmobile trails this season!  Grooming efforts have officially ended as the snow in the woods is too soft to handle heavy equipment, the roads and trails near the roads are muddy and/or bare, and the lakes are getting soupy.  The Chequamegon National Forest trails will close this Sunday, March 20th at 11:59pm. Private property gates will soon close and soon after lake stakes will be pulled.  We look forward to welcoming you to Sawyer County again next season!

The Vilas County trails will officially close at 8:00 am on Friday, March 18, 2022.

Overall, it’s been a great season.  Businesses I’ve talked to have indicated higher amounts of traffic this season.  Vilas trails were open a total of 81 days this season as compared to only 66 days last year.

A special thank you goes out to all the businesses that have supported our clubs through donations and map ads.  Your support is absolutely necessary to continue our trail maintenance.

And, of course, thank you to all the riders who chose to enjoy our trail system.  We hope to see you all again next season!!

Enjoy your summer!!

Trail Report – : Bayfield County, Wisconsin – March 16, 2022

Reporter:BayfieldCounty

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 6-12

Date of Report: March 16, 2022

Area Report:

Spring has sprung and our trails are deteriorating quickly. There is still a lot of snow on the ground, especially in the northern part of the county, but with the temperatures in the forecast snow won’t last long. There’s probably time to get in one last ride but temper your expectations.

Some trouble spots to note:

  • The Wally Polk Trail/Trail 40 near Port Wing and Herbster is closed. Flag road is a suitable re-route.

Namakagon Trail Groomers: We are done grooming. There’s still snow on trails but will probably diminish quickly this week. It’s saying 50 for Wed!!

Barnes Barnestormers: Barnes is done as of last Thursday 3/10/22.

Iron River: Trail 1 north is pretty solid yet. But the roads are bad. Jeff groomed on Friday, 3/11/22 for the last time.

Washburn Valhellers: All of the Washburn Valhellers trails were freshly groomed prior to the warm up. They will provide great evening rides for anyone wanting to get a ride or two in before putting their sleds away. But Mother Nature is unpredictable, so who knows! Grooming will be in a holding pattern until further notice. Out of Valhalla we’re pretty much done with the warm temperatures. Possibly Groom on Friday night and Saturday night. But still lots of snow on the trails.

South Shore Trail Club: Went grooming Monday and Tuesday, most trails are still great however access into all 3 South Shores towns is not very good. Port Wing is ok from the south. Herbster is all pavement or gravel and Corny has logging on both sides of town, I had to turn around yesterday due to mud.
