Reporter:hurley@hurleywi.com

Trail Conditions: Open

Snow Cover: 0-6

Date of Report: January 29, 2024

Snowmobile Information:

There is no sense in describing every rock, bare spot, slush, and plowed road. Things around here and in Michigan are not great. We hope to have groomers out early Saturday and Sunday mornings to pull in whatever snow is left. Our crystal ball shows nothing great for a couple weeks or longer, but it’s fairly cracked from us throwing it repeatedly this season, so who knows 🙄 Keep the Faith and please support our local businesses when you come to our area

Trail Report – : Iron County, Michigan – January 29, 2024

Reporter:Colleen

Trail Conditions: Not Ridable

Snow Cover: 2 – 3 inches

Date of Report: January 29, 2024

Area Report:

Hello everyone,  Nothing new to report to you as yet… still waiting for that big snow storm… or several smaller clippers to come in and give us about 12 -18 inches of snow cover. This seems to be a very odd winter no matter where one lives this year. Clubs with their groomers and operators are just waiting to get out on the trails this season. We know it’s coming.. we’re just not sure when and for how long it will last. 😉  I know once we do receive enough snow for grooming…  our trails will be beautiful. Grooming snow is the largest income for the Clubs and helps them to pay for the repairs and bills throughout the year.  So don’t feel that it’s too late in the season to bring those bad boys out on the trail… if there is enough snow… temps are cold enough and it’s not April 1st, Iron County groomers and operators will be out on the trails doing the best job possible to keep our trails smooth for your riding!! 😉

Again, we still have 2/months in the season… COME ON SNOW!!  It’s OUR TIME to PLAY!!  🙂

Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – January 26, 2024

Reporter:haywardlakes

Trail Conditions: Poor

Snow Cover: 0-5

Date of Report: January 26, 2024

Area Report:

After a few warm days this week, lakes are going to be the best riding, if you choose to ride.  The trails off the lakes are going to be thin and may get mushy.  Some reports have said that the designated fire lane trails vs regular trails are the best way to get from point A to point B if you choose to go on a trail.

The lakes are rideable but please do so with caution as they are icy and have patchy snow coverage. Always stay on the staked trail. Over the next week crews will monitor for slush pockets or any other dangers and we will update as needed.  Always ride with caution and use your best judgement as anything can change at any given time. Swamp lands are not solid, so we would advise avoiding them.

Lakes that are staked are:

Moose Lake

Nelson Lake

Barker Lake

Spider Lake

Tiger Cat Flowage

Lost Land Lake

Lac Courte Oreilles

Grindstone

Sand Lake

Chippewa Flowage (including the River and dam area)

Whitefish Lake

Callahan Lake

Little Round Lake

Osprey Lake

Big Round

LAKES NOT STAKED:

Long Lake

Sissabagama

Chetac

For your safety and the safety of others following your tracks – DO NOT RIDE UNSTAKED LAKES!

While listing our conditions as poor is not something we want to do, we must warn and provide information with complete transparency. We hope you can still visit even if you don’t ride your snowmobile and visit the surrounding businesses! They would love to see you and would really appreciate your support.  Our local businesses are working together to continue to offer fun activities and great deals!

The beauty of Sawyer County; if you can’t ride your sled, you can ride your ATV/UTV.  Our ATV/UTV trails are open!  Don’t have an ATV/UTV borrow one from a friend, rent one from an area rental business, or if you are feeling spontaneous there are area businesses that sell them.  If you choose to venture out on ATV/UTV, just make sure you follow the map and always know the legend on a map. “Read before you Ride”

Namakagon Trail Groomers Swamps still have wet spots and we need more snow to be able to groom.

Northern Adventures We are done grooming as of now. What base we had is gone.

South Shore Trails Club Trail 1 can be groomed this year if we get snow. Trail 1 from Swedlund road to Campbell road will likely not be groomed this year. With these warm temps the trails should remain closed.

Washburn Valhellers  Trails in the Valhalla area and Bayfield peninsula, including Red Cliff are in poor condition with maybe a 6 to 8 inch base. The warm-up for the next two weeks will have a major impact on the base. Hope for more snow.

Ely Area Trail Conditions

January 25, 2024

Taconite State Trail, Arrowhead State Trail, Putnam/Fishing Lakes Trails, and Lake Vermilion Soudan Underground Mine State Park Tails:    Low snow conditions persist throughout our trail system from Ely to Side Lake to International Falls. Some bits of trail have been groomed and/or rolled, and all the swamps that need to be packed to allow ice to freeze thicker have been packed. However, snow depth remains too thin for wholesale grooming, and uplands and swamps remain rough with few exceptions. Until we get substantial additional snow to improve the base and cover the rocks, hummocks, and holes, full-on trail grooming will not begin. If you are riding the trails, be cautious and alert for rocks, holes, and generally rough trail conditions.

Snow: 0 inches with a base of 0 inches. Groomed: No Condition: Poor

Babbitt Golf Course Trail: The course trail has been groomed and is relatively good with occasional drifting.

Babbitt Birch Lake Plantation:  The trails have not been groomed, as there is not enough snow base to allow for grooming.

Bear Head Lake State Park:  Track was set on January 25th with fair conditions due to the light and fluffy conditions of the snow. The track was set in the campground loops, the Beach Trail, and the trail from the Trail Center to the Ranger Station. Significantly more snowfall is needed to groom the Norberg Trail.

REMINDER: It is unlawful to walk, snowshoe, have pets, or destroy any part of the groomed ski trails in any manner.

Snowshoers are welcome to explore anywhere besides the groomed ski trails. Snowshoers have been enjoying Becky Lake and Blueberry Lake Loops.

Skiing Base: 1-3 inches. Conditions: Fair Groomed: Partially

Snowmobiling conditions: Closed. Groomed: No.  Base: 1-3 inches

Along with the DNR trail conditions website, continue to monitor these clubs’ websites (www.ridetheborders.com/trail-report.html & www.snowmobilevacation.org/trail-updates) for the most current Arrowhead State Trail conditions.
