Snow Cover: Looking better

Date of Report: January 12, 2025

Area Report:

The good news is we received 2-3 inches of heavy snow—not the fluffy lake effect—and it is still snowing. Erika and i rode the Frosty trail system on Friday and determined that we need more snow to open. This snow will definitely help. We will evaluate in the next 24 hours to see how the trails are shaping up. Sure hopes it keeps snowing so that we can get open. The Michigan trails are getting hit hard so it would be great to spread the snowmobiling love around Northern Wisconsin too. Stay tuned and Think Snow!

Trail Report – : Iron County, Michigan – January 11, 2025

Reporter:Colleen

Trail Conditions: Not Ridable

Snow Cover: 3 inches

Date of Report: January 11, 2025

Area Report:

Not much new to report at this time. We received a couple inches of snow yesterday.. but we need at least 10 – 12 inches before groomers will be going out on the trails. The good news is we have a good solid base for when it does start snowing.. it should be good grooming and will hopefully stick around a little longer on those warmer March days.

News and Reports:

Sadly, Winter fest has been canceled due to lack of snow. The event was scheduled for January 18th at the Young’s Recreational Complex. They have decided to host a Smear Tournament instead with live music later in the day.

I’m not really sure if the Free Snowmobile Weekend scheduled for January 17th -19th will do us any good this year…. let’s all hope for a good storm between now and then.  It would be nice if Michigan would move the Free Snowmobile Weekend back into February if it doesn’t happen this month.

On a good note… we have good ice with the cold temps starting back in December and carrying over into January. So for all you “Anglers” grab you pole..tip ups and come on up!!  The fishing is GREAT!!  🙂

February 15th & 16th, 2025 – MichiganFree Fishing weekend! No permits needed.  🙂

Trail Report – : Lake Gogebic | Bergland, Michigan – January 12, 2025

Reporter:AJ’s Walleye Lodge

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 8+ inches

Date of Report: January 12, 2025

Area Report:

Friday, Jan 10th

The Lake Gogebic Area has received almost a foot of snow on Friday and we are forecasted for continuing lake effect and a clipper system on Sunday .

Groomers were out Friday night with one machine that covered Trail 1n to White Pine Friday Evening.

Marenisco crews have been out covering Trail 1S from Marenisco to Presque Isle.  The base is very thin and there are exposed rocks, gravel and dirt in spots, but is rideable and fairly smooth.  The beaver dam that was recently removed drained nicely but left a good size trench so use caution if traveling on this trail.

The grade (Trail 1S and 2 combined) is in good condition.

It is anticipated that groomers will run Saturday and Sunday in double shifts covering all trails in the Lake Gogebic Area with the exception of  8 west which will be covered Monday or Tuesday depending upon how much snow comes in from the anticipated clipper system on Sunday.

Think and be safe everyone!

Ely Area Trail Conditions
January 9, 2025

Taconite State Trail, Arrowhead State Trail, Putnam/Fishing Lakes Trails, and Lake Vermilion Soudan Underground Mine State Park Tails: The rain and warm temps we got after Christmas further depleted our snowpack, and it also caused the snow surfaces to harden, especially in those areas without tree cover. With the following few days of colder temps and no additional snow, swamps were able to add ice, but they still need more to support grooming equipment. We continue to hope for cold temps to increase ice thickness in the swamps, followed by consistent snow to provide groomable trails and good riding!
The main message this week: use extreme caution when riding through swamps and beaver ponds. Swamps still have thin ice in places, and we are seeing more shelf ice than normal in beaver ponds. We are also seeing that many beaver ponds have substantially less water than usual, meaning more hummocks and stumps to watch out for. Also, the dams have turned into a large, steep berm in the middle of the trail. Watch out for these conditions, especially in the following areas: from Big Aspen to Pfeiffer Lake and from Black Bear Trail to the Y Store Trail on the Taconite State Trail and on the Arrowhead just south of the Hwy 1 crossing at the Frazier Bay shelter, and in the Elephant Creek/Blackduck grade segment north of Elephant Lake. There is active logging in a number of locations throughout the Grant-in-Aid and State Trail system. In those areas, slow down and give trucks and logging equipment space.
The trail corridors remain open, but the trails are not groomed, and there is not much snow on them, which means there are exposed rocks and ground in places with a lot of sun.
The main message to anyone riding trails this week is to use extreme caution when riding.
Snow: 6-14 inches with little to no base. Groomed: No Condition: Poor
Babbitt Golf Course Trail: There is not enough snow to groom.
Babbitt Birch Lake Plantation: As of January 2nd, 2025, the trails are unskiable due to lack of snow.
Bear Head Lake State Park: After the soaking rain and warm weather earlier in December, there was no snow, so the groomed ski tracks had melted.
You can snowshoe anywhere in Minnesota’s state parks and recreation areas, except on trails that are specifically groomed for another activity, such as skiing or snowmobiling.
Reminder: Activities such as walking or snowshoeing that damage any part of the groomed ski trail are unlawful.

Trail Report – : Keweenaw Peninsula / Houghton-Hancock, South Range, Copper Harbor, Michigan – January 8, 2025

Reporter:Stretch

Trail Conditions: Fair

Snow Cover: 4 inch base

Date of Report: January 8, 2025

Area Report:

Since the warm up at the end of December things have got a little better. It’s been COLD and snow showers off and on just about every day. However it’s not been enough snow to fix all of the damage the rain did. With that being said most of our trails are rideable with the exclusion of up in the Keweenaw. At this time north of Calumet is rough and would not attempt Copper Harbor until we get more snow. Also it’s hit a miss west around Bergland to Ironwood.
