Trail Report – : Sayner, Wisconsin – December 29, 2022

Reporter:SaynerStar Lake Barnstormers

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: Need More!

Date of Report: December 29, 2022

Area Report:

New Years weekend is historically one of the busiest of the season.  Extensive traffic and minimal snow conditions are not a combination that bodes well for the trails.  It’s been two weeks since we’ve had any wet, heavy snow (dry, fluffy snow does not help us) and it’s becoming obvious.  When trails opened we only had a 2″ base to work with.

Most of the Barnstormer trail system has been in fair to good condition.  The 2 mile stretch coming into Sayner is always our hardest hit and is in poor condition with deep ruts.  I’m told Plum Lake will be marked on Monday, so that will take some pressure off the town trail.

After taking a ride yesterday through three neighboring club systems, it was obvious that other clubs are fighting the same issues.  You’ll find a lot of decent riding, but high traffic areas are getting hit hard.  Every club is doing what they can, but without some more wet snow to work with, we are grooming with dry, worn out snow that will not pack or stay in place.

The Barnstormers will continue doing the best we can with the conditions Mother Nature is offering.  It looks like our best chance for more snow is Tuesday.  High temp is forecast at 35, so it hopefully, it will be more snow than rain!

And finally, after seeing some negative posts on social media, I feel like I have to respond.  If you have never been a groomer driver, please don’t comment as if you know what it takes maintain the trails.  All of the Vilas County clubs are run by people that have been doing this for a very long time.  Blaming the clubs for conditions that are outside of their control is uncalled for and not at all helpful.

TRAIL CLOSURE NOTICE:  Due to ongoing logging operations, the Barnstormer’s trail #51 is CLOSED between TIN 344 and 353!  DO NOT RIDE THIS SECTION OF TRAIL!

Mark your calendars for the following Barnstormer Fundraising Events!

Western U P Snowmobile Trail Report— 12/29/2022

Gogebic Range Trail Authority – ORV & Snowmobile Club

Trail Report 12/29/202

Please be careful out riding. The wet heavy snow on trees mixed with (very) light freezing rain is bringing down more trees. Groomers have cut back the bumps tonight across our main corridors. TRAILS WILL BE BUMPY EARLY AFTERNOON AND THRU THE EVENING, GET OUT EARLY IF YOU CAN’T HANDLE WHAT THE BUSIEST WEEK OF RIDING DOES TO THE TRAILS.

Lake Gogebic Area Groomers

Trail Report 12/29/202

Groomers have reported that they have all trails and access trails set.  Grooming has been resumed however with the abundance of traffic and temperatures the trails are not getting a chance to set up.   Groomers will continue to try to keep the bumps knocked down so that they don’t freeze and become a constant headache all season.    Groomers are doing everything that they possibly can to keep up and have a constant rotation of operators going out.   Our area is being bombarded with traffic.   We thank everyone for visiting our area and understand that we everyone is doing the very best they can!

U P Thunder Riders Watersmeet

Trail Report 12/26/2022

Most snowmobile trails are only 14 to 16 feet wide, you have to be spot on when driving the groomer, cause one miss and off the trail you go! It is heart pounding and intense. These guys and girls are out doing this for 8 to 14 hours. Thunder Riders groomers will be heading out today please use more caution than normal for the next couple of days as they work hard to shape up the trails. A big applause to all the groomer drivers!!

Reporter:hurley@hurleywi.com

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 10-12

Date of Report: December 29, 2022

Area Report:

Temperatures are expected to be above freezing most of today. Although we have been out grooming heavily over the past few days, we are still seeing moguls soon after we complete with all the traffic and slushy snow. It would definitely be a good day to find a fun establishment close to your accommodations, and relax there to help preserve the trails for this coming weekend.

As of now, our trails are still reported in good condition with reasonable base, but our operators are finding it more and more difficult to keep things smooth with these temps. We are doing all we can. PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAILS!! We are fielding numerous complaints of trespassing. Just no excuse for this, and officers have zero tolerance.

Trail Report – : Rhinelander, Wisconsin – December 29, 2022

Reporter:Hodag SnoTrails

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: decent base

Date of Report: December 29, 2022

Area Report:

We are off and running.  It has been a slow start for the season.  As reported across the northern part of the state the ice/snow storm has a huge set back for the clubs in the area.  All trails had to be brushed and inspected after the numerous tress and other hazards from the storm.

We still had some wet areas north of Pelican Lake that had to be packed prior to the tractor/drag combo could safely cross.  Those areas are now froze and the tractor will be out this weekend.

We had some mechanical issues with the track machines, and club volunteers worked hard over the last few days to diagnosis them and both of the machines are now back to 100%.

The fleet is now ready to hit the trails in force.   At this point, not all of the trails have been groomed, but should be by the end of the weekend.  All of the trails north of Rhinelander in our system are groomed.  We will be focusing on the Monico / Pelican Lake and trails to the south in the near future.

Now, the watch outs……The lakes are not marked at this point and should be considered unsafe until they are marked.  Travel at your own risk if you choose to cross them.

The conditions will vastly improve over the next week, but currently, the trails are “Early Season” conditions.

Feel free to get out and enjoy the first opportunities to ride, but temper your expectations at this point.

Trail Report – : Spooner and Washburn County, Wisconsin – December 29, 2022

Trail Conditions: Closed

Date of Report: December 29, 2022

Area Report:

Snowmobile clubs and county staff continue to work clearing trails after the recent storm event. While it will likely be several weeks before we get all of the winter use trails cleared and ready for use, there is a planned opening to open several trail segment for the coming weekend. The following trails will officially open as of Saturday morning, December 31st.

Trail 35 (Wild River Trail) Barron County to Douglas County

Trail 39 Barron County to Spooner

Trail 39 Trego to Trail 8

Trail 8 Wild River Trail to Trail 39

ALL OTHER TRAIL SEGMENTS WILL REMAIN CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

County Staff will be evaluating other trail segments throughout the remainder of this week and may be able to announce additional sections before Saturday morning. Please do not ride on other trail sections at this time. Snowmobiles riding on other trails present a hazard to workers and make clean up efforts more difficult. Law enforcement staff will be monitoring use over the coming weekend. Clubs will begin grooming these segments later today and throughout the next several days. Please ride with caution and stay on designated trail surfaces.

Trail Report – : Conover, Wisconsin – December 29, 2022

Reporter:snobuddies

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 12-14”

Date of Report: December 29, 2022

Area Report:

After finishing grooming at 3:30am, I will say the trails are in Fair to Good condition. The heavy traveled trails were mostly groom twice. The corners were mostly blown out with some showing the dirt below. If we had both grooming units up and running, we may have been able to hit some of the heavy traveled areas more than once.

A light freezing drizzle started around 1am and lasted maybe an hour. It made the last run down Trail 3 a little difficult as the snow was wet and sticking in the groomer pan. With warmer temperatures today, these trails may deteriorate quickly.

Weather forecast showed several storms lining up, hopefully that will bring us some more snow.

News and Reports:

The Cemetery Trail is open. I didn’t groom through there last night, so there might be some rough areas.

If you find a condition that you need to report to the Conover Sno-Buddies like a down tree, water on the trail, etc, either message us on Facebook, use the contact page on our website, or even notify a local establishment. They know how to get a hold of us to fix the issue.

A reminder to ride between the orange blazers. Along Hwy K West, there were several 100 trees removed this summer to place new electric poles. Most of the stumps are still there. If you were to hit one, it could ruin your trip quickly. Ride Right ➡️ Ride Safe.

Snowmobile Information:

Wow, the beachhead is getting pounded. Ran with a friend to Lazy Ace yesterday. Trails in the woods are looking good yet. 17 in the Raven Lake area showing some corners blowing out but good base yet. Out on the tundra in the Powell marsh, 17 is getting thin near the bridge and gravel is starting to poke out, but that whole strip was nice to ride on. Trail 1 Stearns Lake Road is still covered but tough to scrounge snow in spots. Hornshoe president Keith announced no lake marking until further notice. A lot of thin ice in spots and today is predicted to be 38 degrees. A few of the clubs are working through tree issues, and groomer breakdowns. Everyone I met talked of the bumps and wear but were all positive and having fun. Thank all the volunteers that are doing their best to make it happen, and ride alert as conditions change. Mark
