The temp roller coaster ride continues.  Best news is it is going below freezing overnight & will throughout this week.  Next SNOW Monday night into Tuesday.  An inch or 2.

Best Riding is North & East.  The work done in December paid off.   The ice base is holding on most of the trails.  Still SNOW cover especially North & East. As for east it Trail 10E.  Heading south to split of 10E & Trail Alt 13S.  10E & heading to  Three Lakes OR Alt 13S to Three Lakes.

As for west if not bad either.

Very early this morning(3am ish) groomers out .  Trail 10/13 south heading to Trail Alt13S to Loon Lk Rd.  Trail 10/13 north to Conover connect.

Eagle & Catfish Lake trails are open & marked & still safe.  Expect slippery riding & some surface slush from melted SNOW.  Always stay by the orange reflective barrels to be safe.

Please no off trail riding.  If you see orange fencing please follow the trail.

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 8-12”

Date of Report: January 13, 2023

Area Report:

We were back to grooming Thursday night and the crew is out again Friday night. We rode today from Energy Mart south to Eagle Lake, down to trail along 70 East of Eagle River. Trails were in nice shape and holding up well. There was a few thin spots, but not as bad as I thought it could be since we haven’t seen much new snow lately. Rode out to the Habit, Sand Lake Pub and ended at Twin Lake Pub. All the trails were Good, a few spots were fair, but not bad at all.
If we can survive this weekend and the weather on Monday, colder temps and snow is in the forecast. I will update more when we get closer. Stay tuned.

News and Reports:

If you find a condition that you need to report to the Conover Sno-Buddies like a down tree, water on the trail, etc, either message us on Facebook, use the contact page on our website, or even notify a local establishment. They know how to get a hold of us to fix the issue.

  • A reminder to ride between the orange blazers. Along Hwy K West, there were several 100 trees removed this summer to place new electric poles. Most of the stumps are still there. If you were to hit one, it could ruin your trip quickly. Ride Right ➡️ Ride Safe.

Ely Area Trail Conditions

January 10, 2023

Active logging is happening in several spots throughout the Grant-in-Aid and State Trail system. Please slow down and give trucks and logging equipment space.

Conditions across our trail system vary widely right now depending on swamps and creeks crossed by each trail. Especially now, continue to use caution and remain alert for thin ice, occasional open water, and other changing trail conditions. Continue to monitor conditions online, as they will continue to change rapidly over the next couple of weeks: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/snow_depth/index.html

Taconite State Trail: The entire trail from Ely to Side Lake is groomed and in fair condition except for two 2-3 mile segments of ungroomed trail – the first segment is just west of the Pike River bridge, and the second is 2 miles west of Pfeiffer Lake. Also, continue to use caution in the Ely-to-Purvis segment as it remains narrow.

Snow: 14-26 inches with a base of 1-4 inches. Groomed: Yes Condition: Fair

Arrowhead State Trail: Almost the entire Arrowhead is groomed and in fair condition. The first few miles from the Taconite State Trail junction north to Lost Lake Rd remain ungroomed (continue to check the DNR website for updates) due to open water and thin ice in the first part of Lost Lake swamp. The Landing Spur north to the Orr South spur will get its initial groom before this coming weekend.

Along with the DNR trail conditions website, continue to monitor these clubs’ websites (www.ridetheborders.com/trail-report.html & www.snowmobilevacation.org/trail-updates) for the most current Arrowhead State Trail conditions.

Arrowhead Trail Snow: 16-28 inches of snow with a base of 1-4 inches. Groomed: Yes Condition: Poor to Fair

Putnam/Fishing Lakes and Lake Vermilion Park Trails: These trails are open, but continued caution is needed while riding. As we get the Arrowhead and Taconite fully groomed, we will be shifting more of our time and equipment toward opening the Putnam-Fishing Lakes and State Park trails. High ground and dry swamps are still very rough, and ice in swamps remains inconsistent. If using the trails right now, please use caution and travel at your own risk.

Babbitt Birch Lake Plantation: Groomed for classic skiing and in fair condition with sections of tree debris from the last wind storm. Babbitt golf course is groomed for skate and classic skiing and is in excellent condition.

Bear Head Lake State Park: The first track of the season was set on Thursday, December 29th, with fair results on the campground loops and the Beach Trail to the Trail Center. The trail base is set up firmly, but the recent storms have littered the forest floor with branches, needles, pine cones, etc. Pay caution while skiing. Norberg Trail needs more snow to be groomed.

Skiing Base: 10 inches. Conditions: Fair. Groomed: Partially. Snowmobiling conditions: Fair. Groomed Partially.  Base: 8 inches.

Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – January 13, 2023

Reporter:haywardlakes

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 12-15 Inches

Date of Report: January 13, 2023

Area Report:

The reports are that all trails in Sawyer County have been cleared and all will have officially been groomed by end of day on Friday. This means that all trails that have been cleared since the storm and have been groomed at least once this season. Some of have been groomed several times. You can track the grooming progress in the GTS app.

The trails are beautiful; although the big work is under control, there will still be areas of concern and falling branches through the season so please reach out to the Sawyer County Snowmobile and ATV Alliance and let them know if you encounter an area where safety is a factor.  This can be anything from down trees, big branches, drifts piled too high, signs knocked down or signs absent.

Lakes are rough due to the slow freeze and amount of slush. All lakes are staked for riding except Lake Hayward. We are unsure of an eta at this time. Some lakes are better than others. Over time they will get better but please ride with caution and stay on the marked trails. If you must go off the trail to lodging or dining, please ride with caution at safe speeds and watch for heaves, frozen tracks, and slush.

All surround counties are fully open and report good to excellent riding except Rusk County, which is partially open and still working with storm clean up.

Have a great weekend and ride safe!

EAGLE RIVER TRAILS
All conditions

The temp roller coaster ride continues.  Best news is it is going below freezing overnight.  This continues. 10 tonight & 24 tomorrow night. Little or no sun.

Most trails have SNOW cover. This morning will be icy if you are riding.  SNOW depth & base varied. 6 miles east on Trail 10E still SNOW covered & base holding.  Closer to town thinner & snirt.  Section of 10/13 south from the intersection of those trail to Dairy Queen still SNOW covered & Very Good. Through town covered but thin.  Improves alot from Hwy G crossing of 10/13 heading north.  Conditions west, Trail 70/17/13 & 7 same as 10E.  Adventure sledding.

Very early this morning(3am ish) groomers out .  Headed north from Groomer Barn.   Trail 10/13 north to re route across swamp off of Adams Rd. Trail 17N to Trail 3 aka Manske Swamp intersection.   Grooming Trail 3 heading west to connect with Trail 10/13 to the Conover connect north of Eagle River.  Unsure if Wisconsin River Bridge section of 10/13 was groomed.

Eagle & Catfish Lake trails are open & marked & still safe.  Expect slippery riding & some surface slush from melted SNOW.  Always stay by the orange reflective barrels to be safe.

If you are riding please take a phone & map.  Let someone know where you’re going to go riding.

Last, off trail riding is a big problem.  In Eagle River there is a re route of Trail 10/13 that heads north out of Eagle River.  The change is at the intersection with Trail 17N. Across the highway from the Best Western Derby Inn.  The landowner closed a section.  The trail is clearly marked heading around the gas company.  It comes out at the Hwy G road crossing.  Despite clearly signing & orange fencing riders are riding off trail.  If this section is closed there will be NO direct route heading north out of town. Same goes for Trail 70 coming into Eagle River from the west.  If you see orange fencing it is because the landowner is thinking of closing trail. PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL.

Keep DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!!  THINK COLD!

See ya on the trails real soon!
