Trail Report – : Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin – January 13, 2023

Reporter:haywardlakes

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 12-15 Inches

Date of Report: January 13, 2023

Area Report:

The reports are that all trails in Sawyer County have been cleared and all will have officially been groomed by end of day on Friday. This means that all trails that have been cleared since the storm and have been groomed at least once this season. Some of have been groomed several times. You can track the grooming progress in the GTS app.

The trails are beautiful; although the big work is under control, there will still be areas of concern and falling branches through the season so please reach out to the Sawyer County Snowmobile and ATV Alliance and let them know if you encounter an area where safety is a factor.  This can be anything from down trees, big branches, drifts piled too high, signs knocked down or signs absent.

Lakes are rough due to the slow freeze and amount of slush. All lakes are staked for riding except Lake Hayward. We are unsure of an eta at this time. Some lakes are better than others. Over time they will get better but please ride with caution and stay on the marked trails. If you must go off the trail to lodging or dining, please ride with caution at safe speeds and watch for heaves, frozen tracks, and slush.

All surround counties are fully open and report good to excellent riding except Rusk County, which is partially open and still working with storm clean up.

Have a great weekend and ride safe!

The temp roller coaster ride continues.  Best news is it is going below freezing overnight.  This continues. 10 tonight & 24 tomorrow night. Little or no sun.

Most trails have SNOW cover. This morning will be icy if you are riding.  SNOW depth & base varied. 6 miles east on Trail 10E still SNOW covered & base holding.  Closer to town thinner & snirt.  Section of 10/13 south from the intersection of those trail to Dairy Queen still SNOW covered & Very Good. Through town covered but thin.  Improves alot from Hwy G crossing of 10/13 heading north.  Conditions west, Trail 70/17/13 & 7 same as 10E.  Adventure sledding.

Very early this morning(3am ish) groomers out .  Headed north from Groomer Barn.   Trail 10/13 north to re route across swamp off of Adams Rd. Trail 17N to Trail 3 aka Manske Swamp intersection.   Grooming Trail 3 heading west to connect with Trail 10/13 to the Conover connect north of Eagle River.  Unsure if Wisconsin River Bridge section of 10/13 was groomed.

Eagle & Catfish Lake trails are open & marked & still safe.  Expect slippery riding & some surface slush from melted SNOW.  Always stay by the orange reflective barrels to be safe.

If you are riding please take a phone & map.  Let someone know where you’re going to go riding.

Last, off trail riding is a big problem.  In Eagle River there is a re route of Trail 10/13 that heads north out of Eagle River.  The change is at the intersection with Trail 17N. Across the highway from the Best Western Derby Inn.  The landowner closed a section.  The trail is clearly marked heading around the gas company.  It comes out at the Hwy G road crossing.  Despite clearly signing & orange fencing riders are riding off trail.  If this section is closed there will be NO direct route heading north out of town. Same goes for Trail 70 coming into Eagle River from the west.  If you see orange fencing it is because the landowner is thinking of closing trail. PLEASE STAY ON THE TRAIL.

Keep DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!!  THINK COLD!

See ya on the trails real soon!

Trail Report – : Phelps, Wisconsin – January 12, 2023

Reporter:Phelps Snowmobile Club

Trail Conditions: Good

Snow Cover: 8″-10″

Date of Report: January 12, 2023

Area Report:

The Phelps trails were not groomed last night due to warm temperatures.  There is a good solid base, and more snow is needed.  Our swamps are safe for sleds but not yet for groomers to go across.  Please use caution as you approach them.  Cooler weather is forecasted over the weekend and grooming is set to resume.  Please stay on the marked trails both on solid ground and on the lakes.  Off-trail riding is trespassing and a good way to wreck this sport for all of us. Please turn this habit around before we start losing trails.

News and Reports:

Please stop by the Phelps snowmobile club and the Conover Sno-Buddies Trailside Roast This Saturday from 10:00 to 2:00 at the intersection of Trail 6 and Trail 45 at TIN # 500.  Free! Donations appreciated.

All Ashland County trails currently have 8-12 inches of packed/groomed snow on the trails.  All trails are cleared of downed trees and made passable with areas of some small branches.  Brushing is continuing.  Groomers are out daily on the trails, most of which are being double groomed.  Wet areas are not freezing down for groomers, be cautious in these area.  Currently with all the snow in the trees the trails are post card perfect. Please be safe watch for falling branches and enjoy.  If you would like to have a Ashland County Snowmobile Map please email fdchamber@visitashland.com.

Snowmobile Information:

A lot of Ashland County snowmobile trails are on farmers land, please be respectful so we don’t lose our easement to their property. Snowmobiles may not be modified, or operated, to amplify or otherwise increase the total vehicle noise above the originally manufactured snowmobile noise level.

Click here for Bayfield County Trail conditions. As always please follow the snowmobile trail rules and regulations

As always operate with everyone’s safety in mind and report any hazardous trail issues that are observed to the Ashland County Sheriff’s Department (715-682-7023 opt 1) so that it can be forwarded to the appropriate service.

The Tri-County Corridor is open from Superior to Ashland. There are still several areas on the eastern end that require attention but all known hazards have been identified and marked. Use caution when approaching ribbons, barricades, and cones.

Important reminders: There is no snowmobiling allowed from Ashland to Bad River/Odanah as snowmobiling is not permitted on reservation land.  However, snowmobiling is allowed from Bad River east to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Snowmobile Information:

It’s Thursday before MLK weekend and it’s the bottom of the 8th. Ran a patrol of the whole circuit and overall we are good. Two days of warm and freezing drizzle gave us moisture, and with some zamboni work, trails should firm up. Warm today but cold tonight and 25 tomorrow. 17 from Woodruff to Raven Lake plenty of snow and good. F trail good- brown from snowplow today but lots of snow. Raven Lake area good with some ice at bottom of corners.( Groomers- good job on corners!) 5 into casino good. 17 North from 5 to Mercer line great with a few stones but good snow yet. Lakes marked except Fence. Good running but watch frozen slush spots. Let the pigeons loose, be safe, but ride em like you stole em. Between weather and traffic the next couple days, we may need to stand down for more snow. Mark
