Trail Report – : Antigo/Langlade County, Wisconsin – December 16, 2022

Reporter:langlade

Trail Conditions: Closed

Snow Cover: 4-6

Date of Report: December 16, 2022

Area Report:

In light of the recent snowfall, the public is excited to utilize the winter recreational trails in Langlade County including the snowmobile trails, cross-country ski trails, snowshoe trails, sled dog trails, and fat tire bike trails.  We have experienced a good number of phone calls related to the snowmobile trail opening.

Below are two photos were taken at the Jack Lake ski trail that demonstrates some of the issue being seen by staff and clubs that operate and manage many of our winter recreational trails.  Although trail opening and use vary across Langlade County with some cross-country ski trails open, some trails remain ungroomed and closed. The sled dog club has seen the same issues in its initial trail preparations.

Snowmobile clubs are working hard to get the trails operational, snow amounts vary across the County and some areas still need time to freeze up before trail groomers can access them.  A reasonable amount of time will be required to remove debris deposited on the trails from the heavy rain and ice accumulation created by the storm and some additional cold weather would also help.

In light of the snowmobile trail opening, we are awaiting a response from clubs relating to trail conditions in relation to opening, and trail opening will be announced when trails are safe and operational as determined by the snowmobile clubs and the Langlade County Snowmobile Council.

Langlade County appreciates the recreational users of our Trail systems and the businesses that they support. Our clubs and Langlade County will continue to keep all posted on what hopefully will become a great winter recreation season to come.

Newest report from trail captain in southern part of the county; the Tuscobia and area trails are impassible at this time due to the amount of debris down so they do not have those trails open until they can clear.

The Chequamegon National Forest has not announced a date they will open yet but we are in contact and will update when the forestry decides to open.

While we are in the middle of December and it feels like time, we are a tad early yet and we are making good progress, slowed a bit with the heavy snow but still progressing along. We just need the cool temps! We will update again next week once the temps lower and we can see what Mother Nature has in store for us.

Area Report:

While we love to see new snow, we actually are doing more of an ice dance than anything right now. This heavy snow will put an insulation on our lakes and swamps and slow down the freezing process until it gets really cold. This weekend moving into next week most days call for cold temps and that is a good thing! Many lakes did just freeze over within the last week and have much more freezing to do before staking can happen.

Many private gates don’t begin to open until at the least Dec 15th due to hunting but also do not open until trails are ready to groom so while today is the 15th most will not open yet. This reason is many of these trails lead to swamps/marshes and lakes which are not safe yet, therefore groomers won’t open them and groom them yet to not mislead riders to unsafe areas. The other trails that are on county land also will not be groomed yet as the ground needs to freeze more and this new snow needs to freeze, set up and then be packed down to create a good base that can withstand all season, at this point the snow and ground are still too soft. Also adding some groomers that have low amounts of snow in their areas will need about another 8-12” before they groom to not damage equipment.

We will update again next week once the temps lower and we can see what Mother Nature has in store for us! Until then we will keep our Christmas wish for ice and Christmas riding!!
