Trail Report – : Sugar Camp, Wisconsin – December 24, 2022

Area Report:

The trails are officially open for the year and are in good early riding conditions. The swamps are not froze over enough to support grooming equipment yet so expect to encounter some short stretches of ungroomed, rough trail here and there. Use caution when riding through these areas as you may encounter open spots. Expect to encounter a number of hanging branches in the trail from a recent ice storm. The area lakes are doing well for this early in the season but some have a layer of water between the snow and ice mainly along the shoreline’s. Be safe, have a Merry Christmas, we’ll see you out there.

OPEN – EARLY RIDING

First day of ridin’ is in the books. Inch or 2 of new SNOW yesterday & a lot of wind. Gusts over 40MPH so sure there’s drifting on the trails in the open areas. Didn’t ride yesterday, but did notice some driveway crossingS have trail plowed shut. Be aware of that as you ride.

Grooming in full force building a base. Spoke with the new President, Keith. He told me trails in Early Season Riding. Manske Swamp, Trail 3 and a portion of Trail 17S just south of the Paintball Field, Trail 7 have mushy spots. Wisconsin River Bridge, Trail 10/13 heading west is good to go and tight. Buy a map Trail 10/13 heading north has 2 small reroutes. One due to landowners closing trail due to off trail riding. The other is to get us off a section of Adams Rd north of town. Part is back in the frozen swamp & highland & off Adams.

2 weather alerts on my app this morning. Wind gusts will continue with some Lake Effect Snow. Later today more heavy SNOW & blowing. Going to a lot of drifting. 4-8 inches in the northwest part of Vilas County. 1-3 inches for the rest of the county. Low of 1 tonight

Going to be COLD so dress warm, stop often, have a phone with you, and most important let someone know where you are riding.

As to the 2 lake trails in Sno-Eagles/Eagle River trail, Catfish & Eagle. Neither are marked so not safe. Daily checking of ice depth. Should be marked by next week.

One last reminder as you ride you will meet a groomer. They are big & can’t pull over for us. So pull over & let the driver direct you. And oh ya give ’em a thumbs up. They groom so we can ride!!!

Area Report:

Washburn County Snowmobile Trails will remain closed at this time. With the adequate snow conditions from recent snowfall, there are numerous reports of trees down along trails throughout the county. Clubs are out working to clear trails of debris and will continue to work through the weekend to resolve the issue. We ask that you stay off the trails until open to ensure the safety of the crews working as well as you own. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Trail Report – : Tomahawk, Wisconsin – December 23, 2022

Area Report:

LINCOLN COUNTY: With exceptions, ZONE 1 of Lincoln County opens at 3pm Friday, December 23, 2022.

Zone 1 trails remaining closed are as follows: Portions of Trail 86 and Corridor 19 located south of Hwy 86. Corridor 17 south of the Park and Ride at intersection #30 will remain closed.

All trails in Zones 2, 3, and 4 will remain closed at this time.

Trails are in rough early season condition. Watch for downed branches and trees. Stay off lakes and rivers until trails have been clearly marked by clubs. If a body of water is not marked, it is considered unsafe.

ATVs are not allowed on trails for one week after official opening, and then only when temperatures are below 28F.

ONEIDA COUNTY: All trails in the Oneida County Funded Snowmobile Trail System (as administered by the Oneida County Forestry, Land, & Recreation Department) will officially open for the winter season at 8:00 am on Friday, December 23, 2022.

All lake and river trails in Oneida County are considered unsafe and should not be utilized until they have been clearly marked by a local snowmobile club.

With the anticipated winter storm, including high winds and blowing snow going into the Christmas holiday weekend, please use extreme caution while riding. Downed trees and low hanging branches may be encountered. The trails are in rough, early season condition.

As always, the Oneida County Forestry, Land, & Recreation Department reminds riders to stay on marked trails. Off trail riding is trespassing and could result in closure or loss of trails and citations and fines for those who participate.

Trails are open and it is very cold, 2 degrees at 4 pm with 25 below real feel with the wind at 25 to 35 , only saw a few die hards out there today, good news is that it will warm up next week but i hope not to warm. Clubs have been out panning with the new snow. There have been branches down with the winds so please remove them if can.Were going to see some heavy holiday traffic next week so beware that if the lakes are not marked to stay off them. Remember that this will be early season riding and there might be some holes or bumps that need more snow to fill in so take it easy and stay on your side.

Boulder Junction Snowmobile Club Trail Report – Friday, 12/23/22:

It’s -5 degrees out on opening day of the 2022-2023 snowmobile season in Vilas County.

We have been out brushing and panning our trails in the last few weeks in anticipation of todays opening.

Since Wednesday, we have groomed our entire trail system and will now start our normal grooming schedule.

Please use caution as there are numerous areas of overhanging branches from last weeks wet snow and this weeks fresh snow. Also there are logging operations in progress on 2 of our trails. One is on 8E on the western portion of Nixon Lake Road and the other is on Trail 2W near the intersection of Keego and Bear Lake Roads. Logging Ahead caution signs are in place in these areas.

We anticipate heavy holiday traffic, so ride safe and stay on the right side of the trail.

Although we received several inches of snow an insufficient amount has fallen to open the trails.

Please keep in mind that a new solar farm is being constructed in Kenosha County.

The Northern boundary is Cty KR

The Eastern boundary is 144 st

The Southern Boundary is State HY 142

The Western boundary is State Hy 45.

These boundaries are not exclusive and some areas west of Highway 45 may be affected.

Stay on Trails. Trespassing is never OK. The trail through the solar farm can be temporary. If trespassing should

occur we will loose this trail………..Please ride responsibly.

There is active logging happening on a number of spots throughout the Grant-in-Aid and State Trail system. Please slow down and give trucks and logging equipment space.

Taconite State Trail: The Taconite has been groomed once from Ely to Tower. Use caution in the Ely-to-Purvis segment as it remains very narrow. And the segment through the swamp between Purvis Rd and Bear Head Rd/CR 128) remains ungroomed. The remainder of the Taconite along with the rest of our trail system is still getting cleared of brush and trees pulled down by the recent snow, and we also continue to pack the swamps and beaver ponds to allow the slush and ice to freeze thick enough for grooming equipment. Snow: 16-28 inches of snow with a base of 0-4 inches Groomed: Partially Condition: Poor
Arrowhead and Putnam/Fishing Lakes State Trails: are open, but extra caution is needed while riding. The heavy snow we got last week has created a lot of slush in the swamps and beaver ponds, but the good side is that it will help to create a good trail base for the rest of the grooming season. Our trail crew continues to re-clear brush/trees from the trail and pack swamps and beaver ponds to allow for additional grooming before the new year. High ground and dry swamps are still very rough, and ice in swamps remains inconsistent. If using the trails right now, please use caution and travel at your own risk.
Arrowhead Trail Snow: 16-24 inches of snow with a base of 0 inches Groomed: No Condition: Poor
Babbitt Birch Lake Plantation: Is groomed for classic skiing. Babbitt golf course is groomed for classic and skate skiing and is in excellent condition.
Bear Head Lake State Park: This trail provides rolling topography through birch and pine stands. You may see a variety of wildlife ranging from deer, wolves, ruffled grouse, and pine martens. Snow depth is 17-20 inches. Skiing conditions: Poor trails are not groomed Base: 10 inches. Snowmobiling conditions: Poor, trails are not groomed Base: 8 inches.

The Vilas and Oneida county trails officially opened this morning (Dec 23) at 8:00! All of the Barnstormer trails have been freshly panned and have since had sub zero temps to help them set up. Even with the good snow we got last week, it all panned down to just a 2″ base. So, we’ll be needing more wet snow to build this up more. The 6″ we got two nights ago was just dry fluff & not much help.

There are early season riding conditions. There has not been enough snow to fill some of the ruts, so be prepared for those bumps. Expected high winds over the next couple of days could bring down more trees. If you are so inclined, it wouldn’t hurt to bring a chain saw or some loppers along on your ride!

Ice conditions still vary, so please DO NOT cross any lake that isn’t marked!

TRAIL CLOSURE NOTICE: Due to ongoing logging operations, the Barnstormer’s trail #51 is CLOSED between TIN 344 and 353! DO NOT RIDE THIS SECTION OF TRAIL!
