Trail Report – : Iron County, Michigan – January 3, 2023

Reporter:Colleen

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 5 – 10 inches

Date of Report: January 3, 2023

Area Report:

Hello everyone and Happy New Year!  We had some decent snowfall and trails were rideable and had been groomed a couple times before Christmas… however… the weather changed on us and we had warmer temps with some drizzle right after Christmas.  We still have some snow on the ground but the trails are not in great condition… still rideable … but at best I would say early season riding… not a lot out there right now.

We’re hoping for some cold temps and for a minimum of 12 inches would be nice to get back on our trails.  We’ll keep you posted… but honestly at this point they are calling for 3-6 in our area for tomorrow and we really could use twice that amount. We’ll have to wait and see what happens.

News and Reports:

Trails are open… currently not being groomed do to low snow amounts on the trails.  For this upcoming weekend you may have better luck to the west and north of us regarding trail conditions.

Trail Report – : Conover, Wisconsin – January 2, 2023

Reporter:snobuddies

Trail Conditions: Early Season

Snow Cover: 8-12″

Date of Report: January 2, 2023

Area Report:

So, with all the holiday traffic, the trails took a hit. I would rate the trails Fair to Good. Straight aways seem to have held up. Most corners are icy or down to the dirt. There was no grooming on Sunday, but the crew is back out Monday night. I took a short ride in the groomer as he was working Trail 13 and Trail 45 ( The D-Loop) near Bauer’s Dam. He was able to pull snow in on the corners and cover up the bare ground. Hopefully we see some colder temps tonight to set it up, but at 7:30 pm Monday, it is 29* outside.

The forcast is for 3+ inches of snow coming in Tuesday into Wednesday. Stay tuned for totals, hopefully we get more. Then the temps are suppose to bottom out. That should make the trail base good.

News and Reports:

The Cemetery Trail is open.

If you find a condition that you need to report to the Conover Sno-Buddies like a down tree, water on the trail, etc, either message us on Facebook, use the contact page on our website, or even notify a local establishment. They know how to get a hold of us to fix the issue.

A reminder to ride between the orange blazers. Along Hwy K West, there were several 100 trees removed this summer to place new electric poles. Most of the stumps are still there. If you were to hit one, it could ruin your trip quickly. Ride Right ➡️ Ride Safe.

Snowmobile Information:

Our annual Poker Run starts December 24th and ends on March 4th. You can pick up game cards to be stamped at several locations in Conover, Eagle River, Phelps, and Land O Lakes. Draw party is March 4th. No need to be present to win.

January 14th – 10am-2pm – Trailside Brat Fry. Meet Conover and Phelps snowmobile clubs at intersection 500 for Brats, Hot Dogs, Hot Chocolate. and s’mores. This is where 3 clubs meet on trail 6 and 8 along the power lines near Blong Rd.

January 28th – 1pm-4pm – Chilli and Soup Cook-off at Wild Turkey. Entreries must be there by 12:45pm. Bring a crook pot full of your favorite recipe. Or stop by and be a judge on entreries.

SNO-EAGLES – EAGLE RIVER TRAILS
EARLY SEASON RIDING – Poor to Fair

Longer report today with riding ideas. No new snow overnight. Next SNOW forecast to move in late Tuesday morning & continue through Wednesday.  No firm totals.  Temps will be in the low to high 20’s which impact how much sticks to the ground.

As for the trails it’s Adventure Sledding with little change.  Trails north are much better than south trails.  Trail 13/13C the Bauer’s trails are in pretty good shape. Lots of tree cover.  Head north out of town on 10/13 all the way to the turn that takes you over the Wisconsin River Bridge area.  Once crossing the bridge it will be a rough.  At the 10/13 intersection head north (right turn) that will head you to the better trails. No report on 17N that branches off of 10/13 in town.  Assume it’s icy, rough & thin as it has lots of open areas.

Heading south through town are icy & burn through at the road crossings. Road routes are ice covered. The grade just past Dairy Queen is under tree cover & should be pretty good. Heading south to Three Lakes is covered in most areas & icy with some mushy areas.  Heading east on 10E will be ragged until you get to the Hockey Sports Arena along Hwy 70E.  The one way heading east on the south side of road is fair to good from there except for road crossings.  Heading back on the north side icy snow cover until just past the trail that takes you to Chanticleer & Eagle Lake. From there it is poor with little snow cover.  Riding west of town same conditions along Hwy 70W.

Grooming was limited last night.  Here are the areas groomed:

Heading north – Trail 10/13 from groomer barn to Trail 17N intersection to Trail 3 aka Manske Swamp back onto Trail 10/13 across Wisconsin River bridge which heads west.

After crossing Wisconsin River Bridge at intersection of Trail 10/13 south (left turn) on Trail 10W.  Mid way down Trail 10W & Trail 7S connect.  Both were groomed.

NOTE – DEERVIEW LANE SECTION OF TRAIL 1N THAT HEADS TO EAGLE LAKE HAS HEAVY TRUCK TRAFFIC.  Slow down & be aware.

Eagle & Catfish Lake trails are open & marked.   Take it slow.  Hard ice & surface slush pockets particularly on the turn that takes you off the lake to Townline Rd. Stay by the orange reflective barrels to be safe.

Some reminders when you ride. Have a Map or Phone App. Please no off trail riding & stop at driveways.  Also as you ride you might meet a groomer.   They are big & can’t pull over for us.  So pull over & let the driver direct you.  And oh ya give ’em a thumbs up.  They groom so we can ride!!!

Keep DOIN’ THE SNOW DANCE!!

See ya on the trails real soon!!

Snowmobile Information:

Keith and I say excellent. I groomed north of H on 17 and 5. Watch corners in Raven Lake area. They get blown up and we try to shuffle the goodies back as best we can but plenty of snow. Out on the tundra in the Powell marsh gravel is there mixed in by the bridge but the whole run is covered by snow. Trails held exceptionally well under the weekend traffic. 5 into casino was worked over but cleaned up nicely. Some sand tinge on 17 to Woodruff but good snow. No update on lakes yet but on Terra Firma trails are thumbs up. Mark

Happy New Year’s from Phelps Wisconsin.  Trail conditions are as good as can be with the limited amount of base, warm temps and lots of traffic.  Our swamp areas have yet to be groomed and more snow and cold is needed to help get the trails back into shape.  Lot of snirt reported out on the trails.  Snow is in the forecast for Tuesday and hopefully we get 6 or more inches.  The lake trail across North and South Twin is marked.  If used, please stay on the marked trail.  There is a lot of slush out on the lake.  We want you to be safe and return back to our area.  Please check back for more updates.

Date of Report: December 31, 2022

Area Report:

After the warm temps hit a few days ago we had to halt grooming for a day until the it got cold enough. This made for a icy base and icy corners , we will be out trying to pull in some snow from the edges to make it less icy and some snow for coolers . Once you get out of town and into the woods they are much better. Snow forecasted for Tuesday and Wednesday, 4-5 inches they say, we need it.
