Trail Report – : Conover, Wisconsin – March 13, 2026

Area Report:

 Vilas County trails officially open back up on Saturday March 14th at 8am. 

We received another good 7+” of wet snow. Trails are being panned and inspected on Friday. We will not have the cemetery trail open due to the water in the swamp in there. Pioneer Lake and Buckatabon Lake are not marked with barrels at this time, they have been pulled off for the season. North Twin Lake is marked, stay by the barrels if you cross it. 

As you ride, several other clubs will not be taking their grooming equipment through swamp areas, so if the trail is not closed by a gate, it may be rough. Other areas will have gates closed. Be aware as you ride. 

We are supposed to get a lot more snow on Sunday which could make travel hazardous. 

Regardless of how much snow we have, the trails will close on March 31st at midnight.

Snowmobile Information:

Vilas County Trails will open, tomorrow, Saturday March 14, at 8:00 AM. Our system is groomed, with a good base, just watch for ice. Lakes are not marked, and lake travel is not recommended due to slush. Depending on what model you follow, we could get 12-18″ from 7:00 Saturday to Monday morning. Epic riding. All Northern Hornshoe trails are groomed and ready to open. Have fun and ride safe. Mark

Area Report:

The area received around 8 inches of snow overnight and the trails will reopen later today.The Groomers will start grooming tonight and continue through the weekend.Please be aware of water under the snow and many sticks and branches on the trails. The area is expecting a major winter storm starting Sunday and going through monday.We are expecting 2 to 3 feet of snow.Watch for big snow banks at road crossings that groomers have not gone through.

Area Report:

Vilas county has announced that trails will officially reopen tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM (Saturday, March 14)!

We are essentially starting from scratch after the springlike weather last week.  The new snow has not yet had a chance to freeze to the base, so you will need to ride with caution.  Some road routes may still be thin.  Expect that corners will not hold snow for long, so they will be icy and very slick!  Star Lake is still marked and Plum Lake has been remarked.  Please stay close to the markings as there are some homeowners that have aerators near their docks and ice may not be safe.

The winter storm expected over the next two days will likely bring down more trees & branches.  Please anticipate that you may come across a few obstacles!  We would certainly appreciate your help in getting them cleared from the trail.

The Barnstormers will be out grooming today and tonight so that our entire system will be groomed by opening tomorrow morning.  We’ll be continuing with our regular grooming schedule until trails close.

Don’t forget about the drawing to give away a 2025 Polaris 650 VR-1!  There is still time to purchase raffle tickets!  The drawing will be held at Sayner Pub on Saturday, March 14!  Beginning at 11:00 am, there will be food & raffles all day up until the snowmobile drawing at 5:00!!

Trail Report – : Phelps, Wisconsin – March 13, 2026

Area Report:

The Vilas County Snowmobile Trail system will reopen Saturday March 14, 2026 @ 8:00 am.  the Phelps area has great new snow and grooming is being done.  We are not grooming our swamps so it may be a little rougher in those areas.  Please us caution in these areas.  More snow predicted for Sunday and Monday with areas of 2″+ of snow.  Looks like the season is extended into the near future.  Break the gear out of storage and get back on the trails.

THE VILAS COUNTY SNOWMOBILE TRAIL SYSTEM INCLUDING ALL STATE FUNDED AND CLUB FUNDED TRAILS WILL RE-OPEN ON   SATURDAY, MARCH 14, 2026, at 8:00 a.m.

 

The 11 Vilas County Snowmobile Alliance Clubs have certified that the snowmobile trails in Vilas County are safe to re-open.  Please thank these clubs for their efforts in preparing the trails to re-open. Without these dedicated clubs and our landowners, snowmobiling would not be possible in Vilas County. 

 

Please note that some trails may be closed due to water issues and some trails may not be groomed. Remember, slow down and drinking and snowmobiling do not mix. Alcohol consumption and speed are the leading causes of accidents and fatalities. Most riders do not know where public land and private property lines are and we ask that when out on the trails, assume that all the trails are on private property. Off trail riding is trespassing and could result in closure or loss of trails and fines for those who violate. 

 

We hope you enjoy the 500 plus miles of state funded and club funded trails in Vilas County and thank you for supporting the local economy of Vilas County.

Area Report:

The Vilas County Trail System still remains closed at this time. It will re-open Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 8am.

At 8:00 a.m., it’s 9 degrees out sunny skies. We received 4.5” of snow yesterday and are
expecting 4”-8” tonight. Other area clubs have been out panning yesterday and we will be going
out today and tomorrow to smooth things out.
With the cold weather and additional new snow, we are anticipating that the trails may reopen
soon. But before that happens, all Vilas County club trails need to be inspected and verified that
they are safe and a vote needs to be held between the 11 Vilas County clubs.
Keep an eye on social media for any upcoming public service announcement regarding Vilas
County trails reopening!

Snowmobile Report –March 13, 2026
Mother Nature has spoken  again!—We are reopening the snowmobile trails today.  All trails will not be groomed. Late season riding, lowlands have water standing so ride with Caution. Watch for Groomers when on trails.

One Reroute:   starting 1/18 due to logging operations: Trail 11 to Iron County will be detoured. You need to follow Nig Rein Rd to Camp E Rd to reconnect at Bear Track Rd!

Reminder everyone that the Ashland Waterfront Trail is not open to motorized vehicles, including snowmobiles and ATVs. Anyone caught riding on the Ashland Waterfront Trail will be ticketed.

When snowmobiling please stay on the trail.  A lot of Ashland County snowmobile trails are on farmers land, be respectful so we don’t lose our easement to their property.

03/21/2026: 12th Annual Trail Groomer and EMS Appreciation Party, Lakewoods Resort & Lodge, 1-4pm, Everyone is Welcome to Attend!! Enjoy great food, raffles, games, and more while recognizing the hard work of our area’s trail grooming community. We FINALLY had a winter season in our area and phenomenal trails to ride, thanks again to our incredible groomers. But there is still a great deal of work that goes into the trail system year-round. We want to recognize the efforts of all the groomers and the trail workers who help make our trails the best in the nation. But that’s not all. This event is also an opportunity to recognize the invaluable contributions of our emergency services personnel. They, too, work tirelessly to keep our area safe, allowing residents and visitors alike to enjoy our trails and all the wonders our area offers. Anyone is welcome to come and support the cause. 100% of the funds raised go to support the local EMS Services and Snowmobile Alliances of Ashland, Bayfield, and Sawyer Counties. If you want to provide additional support for these amazing people and groups, we are accepting ANY and ALL donation items (i.e. gift baskets, gift certificates, prize items, etc.) to help raise even more for them. VILAS COUNTY TRAILS REMAIN CLOSED AT THIS TIME

We received 4-5” of fresh snow Tuesday night. There is more in the forecast for tonight and again Sunday. We have panned in the recent snow and inspected the trails. Once all 11 clubs vote on a date to reopen, we will post it to social media and I’ll update this post. 

We will probably not open the cemetery trail from Pioneer Lake north to Muskrat Creek Rd. There is a swamp in there that has probably opened up and all of this trail is on private land. Pioneer lake no longer has barrels marking it, nor does Buckatabon Lake from Bauers Dam to Deer Path Resort. North Twin Lake is still marked, stay by the barrels when crossing.
