Snowmobiling Information

Over the river and through the forest to Lincoln County we go! On those cold and blustery days, what better way to spend your time, then to bundle up and hop on your snowmobile. Lincoln County has over 400 miles of groomed trails, so your adventure awaits! During your journey, you will find all sorts of terrain, from farm fields to lakes, streams and the Wisconsin River to hardwood forests. We invite you to begin your adventure in Merrill, where friendly folks are here to help make your stay most pleasurable. We are conveniently located on Highway 51 where our 3 motels are located right on the snowmobile trails. Of course the trails connect with all of our surrounding county neighbors, so the length of your trip has endless opportunities. Plenty of pubs and great places to eat dot the journey.

Prefer to ATV? In the winter months, there are approximately 175 miles of groomed ATV trails. In addition, Lincoln County also offers a summer ATV trail. The trail is about 43 miles in length and connects with Langlade and Oneida County’s summer ATV trail system.

Looking for more winter fun? Merrill is home of the World Championship Ice Drag Races that are held on Saturdays during January and the first weekend of February. Street cars, bracket cars, dragsters and trucks take their racing skills onto a 1/8 mile strip of ice on Lake Alexander. 15 different racing classes, plus novices are welcome. Did you know that you can even snowmobile on the Wisconsin River to Council Grounds State Park where the Ice Drag Races are held?

What else is going on in the Merrill Area? The Wisconsin River offers some of the best ice fishing around. Enjoy cross country skiing? The Underdown Ski Area consists of approximately 33 km of marked trails, which pass through over 4,600 acres of Lincoln County Forest Land. There are also many hunting opportunities in the area. The Lincoln County Forest Land consists of 101,000 acres open to the public, not only for hunting but hiking, biking and camping too. Wildlife available to hunt during open seasons are deer, bear, grouse, squirrel, rabbit, turkey and waterfowl.

There are over 85 miles of trails in Kenosha county. State trails are goomed by two groomers. We encourage you to join a club & You will never enjoy your ride alone.

Kenosha is located in the far southeast corner of the state. Kenosha County Snowmobile Alliance of Clubs trail system connects to Illinois trails and the surrounding Wisconsin counties trails. The trail system is maintained by by volunteers from the six clubs that make up the alliance.

Manitowoc County is a great place for your next winter getaway. It features wonderful family attractions, restaurants, shopping, all sorts of outdoor fun and money-saving vacation options.

Find your fun in many forms: snowmobiling, snowboarding, cross country skiing, indoor ice skating, snowshoeing, and winter camping. Manitowoc is the home of 348 miles of state snowmobile trails including river trails which are maintained and groomed by local snowmobile clubs. Point Beach State Forest grooms 11 miles of beautiful cross country ski trails. There is space for winter camping as well. There are a number of lodges to host you and your friends. Warm yourselves up by the fire after a day of adventure. Other cross country trails can be found in Manitowoc’s Henry Schuette Park and Silver Creek Park, Camp Sinawa near Valders, Collins Marsh Wildlife Area, and more.

Traffic is heavy—even mid week is busy. Trails are being groomed nightly and are holding up nicely. Warmer weather is forecast for Presidents Weekend so we will see what happens. Going to be Nice weather for The Throwback snowmobile Gathering at the Gateway Wed and Thur and The Bent’s Camp Radar Run benefitting The Frosty Club Saturday. Runs from 10 AM to 3:30 PM and Bikini Run at 4PM

Winter snowmobiling excitement runs rampant throughout northern Wisconsin’s Vilas County. Hundreds of lakes and acres of state and national forest lands provide a winter wonderland for enthusiastic riders.

Land O’ Lakes, located on the border of Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula provides an excellent home base for your winter excursions. Trails to the north connect with the serene trail network of the Upper Peninsula. Corridor 6 guides riders across the northern section of Vilas County from Phelps at the eastern border, through Land O’Lakes as it continues on to Presque Isle.

Land O’ Lakes offers the pure enthusiast miles of groomed trails to the north in Upper Michigan and short trips to various Wisconsin towns to the south, east, and west. Gas, rentals, sales, and meals, are within minutes of each lodging facility The snowmobiler can ride from any lodging location without the need of the vehicle that brought them to Land O Lakes.

Annual snow fall generally between 100 and 250 inches 35 miles of groomed trails that interconnect with Phelps, Conover, Eagle River, Starlake and Sayner, as well as the U.P. of Michigan Many of the areas water falls are accessible by sled Park your vehicle and leave the riding to us.

Snowmobile Information:

Ok, with Mary being very busy, and me being laid up, we will both bring you trail reports as we can, with trail boss Nicks help. Team Hornshoe at it’s best.

The report is excellent. Trails are here, wish you were beautiful, if I could see under the helmet and layers. We have been getting small dustings each day so it adds some fluff. Be cautious in the corners as some are getting icey.

We are looking at a warmup starting Thursday through Tuesday. Upper 30’s and even 41 Saturday. Back in the 20’s at night so loaner Hornshoe groomer should be able to womp up some magic to keep the trails going.

Been a troubling year for reckless behavior. No reports on our trails, but some skirmishes on some northern county trails. High speed passing on the left, sleds in the middle of a group hugging inside corners, and sleds running side by side on the trails. What is it? Inexperience? No fear? We can’t police it, and the sheriff and DNR have limited resources. If you see something, and can, try and call people out nicely and ask what they are thinking. We want you to come and have fun, but go home in one piece so you can come back.

Don’t forget the Hornshoe Brat Fry. Trail 17 at the Hornshoe Kiosk, and Mattke Rd. THIS SATURDAY, February 14, 11 AM to 2 PM.

Thanks to all our hardworking snowmobile club members, the Northern Hornshoe Trails Club, our snowmobiling trails have been recognized as some of the best in the state of Wisconsin. We are known for our good will, friendliness, and our culture and history.

Lac du Flambeau Wisconsin is well known for scenic snowmobiling trail vistas and dense woods combine with the awesome vastness of the Powell Marsh Wildlife area and reserve that you cross, makes this one of the most enjoyable rides you will have all season. After a fun ride on the snowmobile trails visit one of our many restaurants, retail stores or casino.

The Lac du Flambeau Wisconsin snowmobile trails are also centrally located so that staying here makes it possible for you to go south to the Minocqua, St. Germain and Eagle River areas, or go north to the “snow belt areas” of northern Vilas County, and on to the UP of Michigan. They are all a short ride away.

Snowmobiling in Juneau County is a lot of things. It’s shooting along a well-groomed trail with your friends on a clear, crisp day watching the pines and scrub oak whiz by. It’s traveling on a moonlight night with somebody special riding behind you as you wend your way to that favorite bar & grill. It’s stopping to watch a herd of whitetails disappear in a flash or listening to the sounds of the woods before moving on.

We have hundreds of miles of trails that are well-groomed and clearly marked thanks to the efforts of our local snowmobile clubs. You’ll enjoy the many changes of scenery as you travel through Juneau County. The southern portion (south of Mauston) has rolling hills, deep valleys and plenty of forest land. The area is part of Wisconsin’s ‘driftless’ region that was spared the destructive force of the last glacial period some 14,000 years ago. You’ll find quiet beauty and quaint cities and villages as you travel the region. The northern part of the county is much flatter than the south but has much more forested land. Pine woods are the primary feature but there’s lots of scrub oak and aspen to make your journey interesting.

The northern trail takes you through the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge with its large expanses of prairie and wetlands. Here, the endangered whooping crane is being trained to migrate to Florida and return to NNWR to help establish a breeding flock. Chances are they will be sunning themselves in Florida when you travel the refuge but if you listen really close, you might be able to hear their calls.

For those of you who crave competition, several of our businesses on Castle Rock Lake sponsor sanctioned time trials on the ice during the season. If the ice is right, you can even traverse the lake to visit the eastern shore but we urge you to be careful. It’s a mighty big lake and it takes a while for it to freeze over so it’s safe to use.

We encourage you to come and visit us during the snowmobile season and find out why we say, ‘Juneau County is really worth a closer look.’

Snowmobiling Information

Almost every snowmobiler in the Midwest is aware of the fantastic winter playground found near the the Iron River area of Bayfield County. Hundreds of miles of wilderness trails provide tours through this area’s natural beauty, beckoning riders to return year after year.

Bayfield County welcomes winter snow enthusiasts to their winter paradise. A special treat for riders can be found on Trail 63, which travels from Hayward north through Cable, Drummond and Grandview as it continues on toward Mason. Along this trail riders will cross three refurbished railroad trestles, the 200 foot Namakagon River Bridge, 585 foot 18 Mile Creek Bridge, and the 325 foot White River Ramblers Snowmobile Bridge, each providing an awesome view.

Trail 7 traveling east from Cable brings riders to the scenic Lake Namakagon, the 10th largest natural lake in Wisconsin. From here a trek south on Trail 8 provides an excellent opportunity to view wildlife as riders travel along the Rock Lake Semi-Primitive Area.

Trails lead in all directions in this scenic Chequamegon National Forest region offering unlimited choices. When staying in this area, snowmobiles are the only transportation you will need since almost everything is accessible via snowmobile. Excellent lodging with roaring fireplaces and great food can be found trailside through out this region.

The Iron River Area is your premier snowmobile destination for Northern Wisconsin. We offer miles and miles of “smooth as a baby’s behind” trails and the friendliest lodging, dining, and entertaining establishments in the state. Many, many folks tell us that we have the best trails they’ve ever ridden on!

All of this and more is set against the winter splendor of the Chequamegon National Forest. With almost a million acres, the National Forest offers the best in Midwest snowmobiling without the crowds of more widely known destinations! The Iron River Wisconsin Area also makes an excellent jump-off point to some other great Wisconsin riding, including Hurley, Hayward, and the rest of Bayfield County. As the Snow Capital of Wisconsin, you can bet that around Hurley, we have more than enough for riders all throughout winter, even when other areas don’t! Our average annual snowfall is 200 inches, but we’ve been known to top the 300 mark in past seasons.

When it comes to the trails, the community is proud to say that they are kept in outstanding shape. With the dedication of the White Thunder Riders in the north and the Mercer Sno-Goers in the south, and the Iron County Forestry Department, the trails are routinely groomed and kept in the best condition possible. They pride themselves at making sure our visitors have the best possible sledding experience they can.

Iron County boasts over 500 miles of scenic trails that can take you through the beautiful county forest, to Lake Superior, up the Penokee Mountains or to the waterfalls for truly spectacular views. Combining our 500 miles with the neighboring counties and Michigan’s U.P. provides you with over 1,000 miles of trails within a 50 mile radius of Hurley. Hayward / Sawyer County, Wisconsin

Sawyer County snowmobile trails are OPEN and in excellent condition!

Groomers are out and reporting that trails are laying down nice and flat. There is plenty of snow both on the trails and in the woods, allowing crews to pull snow into corners, potholes, and crossings as needed. Grooming continues during freezing hours to help preserve the base.

This weekend will be warm — no doubt about it. Trails will soften at times, and heavy traffic may rough up some areas. Open trails near roads and road routes may begin to brown from sun exposure, traffic, and road spray (sand and salt). Wooded trails remain well protected and will offer the best coverage and riding conditions.

Lake travel:

Lakes are currently in good shape, but with warmer daytime temperatures and increased traffic, expect some slush to develop. Overnight freezes can make lake surfaces rough in the mornings and evenings. Ride cautiously, stay on marked trails, and be especially careful when traveling off-trail to private lodging — slush can freeze hard and create rough conditions.

⚠️ Please note: a road has been reported plowed on Nelson Lake, and another on Round Lake off the Peninsula boat launch.

In summary: Trails are open, groomed, and ready to ride! This weekend should be great. With warm temperatures and a busy holiday weekend (Presidents Day on Monday), trail conditions will be reassessed after the weekend once we can better evaluate wear, temperatures, and the forecast ahead.

For now, enjoy what we have and take it week by week. The next full trail update will come next week.

Almost every snowmobiler in the Midwest is aware of the fantastic winter playground found near the Hayward area of Sawyer County and the Cable area of Southern Bayfield County. Hundreds of miles of wilderness trails provide tours through this area’s natural beauty, beckoning riders to return year after year.

The Hayward Lakes region with its rolling hills, hardwood forests, tall pine stands and pristine lakes serves as the hub of the Sawyer County trail system. A journey south from Hayward on Trail 31 takes riders across the frozen Lac Court Oreilles and along Sand Lake before joining the Tuscobia State Trail just east of Birchwood.

This well-known Tuscobia State Trail is also listed as Corridor 10 on the maps. It crosses Sawyer County from east to west passing through Draper, Loretta, Winter and Radisson, as it makes its journey across northern Wisconsin stretching from Michigan to Minnesota.

Traveling southeast from Hayward, snowmobilers are treated to a tour of the undeveloped Lake Chippewa Flowage, Wisconsin’s largest wilderness lake. This focal point of Sawyer County was created in 1923 by a power company dam and has more than 17,000 acres of water with 140 islands and more than 200 miles of natural shoreline.

Trails east of Hayward meander their way towards Clam Lake. Along the way a favorite place to take a break is at the Ghost Hill Scenic Overlook located on a short spur trail off Trail 21 north of Ghost Lake. Don’t forget your camera to take those memorable trip photos.

Grant County – Kieler/Dickeyville, Wisconsin

The Kieler & Dickeyville area is the gateway where Iowa, Illinois & Wisconsin all meet & enter into Grant County’s over 300 miles of trails. From here, connections can lead to Wisconsins 25,000+ mile trail system.

Our local trail system offers the unique experience of crossing varied terrain through some very beautiful farmland. Starting in either town will send you across rolling fields, across several creeks & through many wooded areas where you can occasionally spot deer & other wildlife. Many of the hills & valleys offer scenery worth stopping to snap a few pictures but with plenty of areas that appeal to both the leisure rider as well as those that want to have smooth trails for a quicker pace. Whichever path you choose, you are sure to find well-marked & carefully groomed trails that connect you to other local communities & counties. With many options for eating & fuel, you are sure to love your time spent in the area. Our local clubs are more than happy to help you with locations to park your vehicles for the day or weekend & point you in the direction of some great riding.
