Trail Conditions: Unknown
Snow Cover: Check out the forecast for tonight, and Saturday
Date of Report: February 5, 2025
Snowmobile Information:
Rode 100 miles around Mercer, and White Thunder Trails, yesterday. I got to meet the trail boss from White Thunder yesterday, and Mercer last night at our club meeting. ( I belong to all five clubs around my Hornshoe home) Great people , and they are doing wonders with the little snow we have.
Oneida County opens Friday morning, and Price County, Saturday morning. With that news, and 3-6″ predicted for tonight, and 3-6″ for Saturday, I gave my two groups of friends the green flag for this weekend. I also figured a pre-snow report was in order for riders headed our way.
Trail 17, the main grade, is rough on the south end Mattke to Wishow. If you utilize Fence Lake, at Frying PanTrail, you can access 17 and head north. Good riding all the way through the Raven, and fairly decent to the Powell Marsh. Out in the open in the marsh it is gravel. You can bypass that by utilizing the lake routes, and jump off of Flambeau, pick up 23, River Rd, up to 182. 182 is thin going west, and bumpy to Springstead. 182 east to 17 south of Mercer, has more snow but bumpy. Trail #1, Stearns Lake Rd, and East Boundary, is “OK”.The plows push back to the dirt line, then sleds banging the banks, and the light snows, sort of fill back in. Our club trails, from H down to Moss, Crawling Stone, and the Fence Lake Landing, are also good. The truck ruts between H and 47 are still there, but filling in. We are still “fair”, with no snow.
Yesterday I rode in a group of people that included the AWSC president, Lori, and three former Miss Snowflakes. I am also close friends with a fourth former Miss Snowflake. They all belonged to, and are an active part of KAOS ( Kids And Adults On Sleds), which has their annual group ride in Manitowish Waters this weekend. Nick and Lindsey are a part of Next Gen Riders, which is a group they started for young adults that outgrew KAOS, and are too young for OGOS (Old geezers on sleds). If you ride, and have kids, or you are a young adult that rides, these are great groups to get involved in. As a guy that managed people for 36 years, and got into sledding late in life, I am awed by what families that are involved in AWSC have done to build tight family units that stay friends well into adulthood, and even third generations. I am also thoroughly impressed with the high level of confidence, poise, and professionalism, these young people grow into their adult lives with. This Friday night and Saturday, our groomer Matt is conducting a snowmobile safety class here in Lac du Flambeau. He has room in the class yet, and you can register on the DNR website. I tried to make a connection between Matt, and the KAOS people, a wee too late. But, they were ready to try and come to visit his class, with a handful of KAOS kids. Do a snow dance, and I will update after the snow, and before the weekend. Mark
