Trail Conditions: Early Season
Snow Cover: 6-12 inches
Date of Report: December 29, 2018
Area Report:
The Bayfield County snowmobile trails will be open on Saturday, 12/29/18 and are in early-season condition. Most of the county received a decent, but variable, amount of heavy/wet snow over the past few days. However, warm temperatures and rain preceded the snow. As a result, many wet areas, especially some swamp crossing, are not frozen and still require packing and persistent low temps to develop a hard frost. Approach all wet areas with extra caution and be prepared to turn around if the crossing appears suspicious. Snowmobile clubs are actively opening gates, clearing downed trees and/or limbs, and packing/prepping the trails. Riders should be extra cautious when travelling on the trails during this early season period. Be wary of low hanging branches, wet areas, downed trees and/or limbs, and other similar hazards that may compromise the trail. At this time the trails are NOT groomed. Grooming operations will start when conditions permit. Again, snowmobile trails are open, but in early season condition. Use extra caution, be prepared to turn around or find an alternate route and stay on the trails! For the most up to date report of trail conditions, please contact the local snowmobile club. Below are sections of trail that are currently closed or require additional cautions when riding:
There is no access to Port Wing from Trails 3 and 40.
Trail 1 heading east from Port Wing to Herbster is impassable at this time.
Trail 4, east of Mason and west of Sanborn, from Brown Rd. to the Ashland County line is closed.
Trail 31 South, from Mulligan Creek Rd. to the Sawyer County line is closed.
Trails 15, 80, 90, and 8, in Cable and Namakagon, all have wet/swamp crossings that are not frozen. Extra caution must be taken when approaching these areas. Be prepared to turn around if a crossing is not capable of supporting your machine.
