Area Report:
All the trails her in the Keweenaw, from Copper Harbor to Twin Lakes are opened and being groomed. Trail 17 going through town in Hancock is not being groomed due to the low snow and bare areas, but once outside town the grooming starts. Trail 3 from the bridge in Houghton up towards South Range is also not being groomed due to the low snow, but once close to South Range, grooming resumes. Parking lots and roads are bare and trails when they get near road crossings are light snow, but once you are out on the trails there is still a foot and half and more snow on the trails.
All my renters this week have said that the trails are in good shape and they are having fun riding. Temps have been cold day and night with a few flurries here and there and sun.
There is a beaver dam on the South Freda trail that may let go, so if riding that trail use caution and be aware. Trail 122 between Lake Linden and Gay is closed due to logging–stay off of it. You can take 122 as far as the Dreamland Trail, but no farther. Trail 133 between Gay and Lac Labelle is rough and has low snow. Riders have said that they would stay off of it. You can get into Gay using Trail 124 to get in and back to Trail 3.
The trails will hold up through this weekend, but we will have to see after that. If we got 6-8 inches of snow, the trails would be great.
Do your Heikki Luntta snow dance!
Remember when out on the trails. respect others and private property, slow down for god’s sake. its not a race, stay off all water that isn’t marked for riding, and save the drinking for after the riding! Be safe and Happy Trails from the Trail Goddess!
